What exactly is a barbel??

The barbel (Barbus Barbus) is a fish of flowing rivers, can grow up to 90 cm long, and is known for its enormous fighting spirit; it is accustomed to swimming in the strong current of the river and shows this as soon as it is hooked. This strength makes the fish popular; furthermore, water quality is constantly improving, which means the barbel population is also thriving and can be targeted for fishing.

What makes barbel fishing so enjoyable:
1 Powerful Fight: there is no other whitefish in the Netherlands that fights as hard
2 Active fishing: the fishing is certainly not passive because you will have to work with the current
3 Adventurous: The large rivers with strong currents make the fishing a true adventure.

How did the comeback of the barbel come about?

Through projects such as Room for the River and the construction of fish passages, the barbel has been recovering since the early 2000s and is now abundant in Dutch rivers. Think especially of rivers such as the Waal, IJssel, Maas, Nederrijn, and Grensmaas; these have a healthy population that can be targeted.

What is the perfect equipment for barbel fishing?

Barbel fishing means fishing with powerful materials, as they must be able to withstand the force of the current, the lure, and the use of heavy lead weights. Below you will find various options for recommended equipment:

Barbel rods:
The barbel rod is a feeder rod suitable for casting weights up to 180g; the most commonly used length is 3.6-4.2 meters. This length is desirable for long casts, keeping the line away from rocks, and maintaining control during the fight.
Here you will find our extensive range of barbel rods

Barbel reels:
The reels used for barbel fishing must be equipped with a sturdy and reliable drag system and a large spool for long casts. The 4000-5000 models are generally perfect for this type of fishing.

Lines and the final meter

The main line must be indestructible; everything on the river is sharp. The stones have sharp edges and are usually covered with zebra mussels, which are just like razor blades.

Barbel also requires specific end tackle, here you will find all the small tackle, from From barbel hooks to barbel feeders, everything to fish our friend Barbus Barbus with confidence and convert as many bites as possible.

Rugs/Rodpods

Indispensable for barbel fishing is a sturdy rod rest, preferably a so-called tripod or rodpod in which you can set your rods almost vertically. You cannot get loose rests into the ground, which is why the choice quickly falls on, for example, a tripod; you can weigh this down by hanging a bag with a few stones in it, for instance. You can also often embed it a bit with stones so that it stands super firmly, and that is necessary due to the often rock-hard bites!

The final points to note:

Keep the rod nice and high during the fight and especially in the final phase. This is because a barbel tends to want to dive headfirst into the rocks, which can result in a broken leader.

Make sure you bring a good unhooking mat and ensure it is thoroughly wet before placing your catch on it, so that you can return this beautiful sport fish unharmed.
